About Prevention First of Colorado

Prevention First Colorado is a collaborative state-wide effort created to empower women and girls to take charge of their health.

    Prevention First Colorado has three main goals:

  • To conduct in-depth social research in order to identify the real world issues that prevent Colorado women from using birth control and family planning resources effectively;
  • To identify policy directions, based on scientifically collected social science data, that will help Colorado women make healthy birth control and family planning choices; and
  • To develop a model education program that addresses the barriers and challenges that Colorado women face regarding birth control and family planning, and provide them with the tools and resources necessary to address these challenges.
  • Our approach is composed of four main steps:

  • Coalition-building: Bringing together a committed, diverse group of non-profit organizations, public policy leaders and others concerned about the health and well-being of Colorado women and girls;
  • Research and analysis: Determining the barriers and challenges facing Colorado women and girls in reducing unintended pregnancy, with a focus on Colorado women's and teens' attitudes and behaviors regarding the use of contraception;
  • Public policy recommendations and implementation: Developing recommendations based on research findings; these recommendations will be presented through a policy report to political and community leaders and others; and
  • Public education: Carrying out a public-education campaign, based on research findings and recommendations, to help women and girls reduce unintended pregnancy.
